Facebook Launches New Pages, Messaging System

Facebook recently announced the launch of new Pages and the new messaging system.

The updates to Facebook Pages make them the same as the new profile that came out a few months back. Instead of tabs along the top, users can navigate using the links in the left hand sidebar, just link any other place on the Facebook site.  Users will also see a row of photos along the top of the Page, similar to the “recently tagged” photos along the top of the profile.

A major feature of this update allows Pages to post as that Page on other Pages, so it looks like the post or comment is coming directly from that page, and not just another Facebook user. This allows Pages within a community to interact with each other as businesses/social clubs etc. For example, Pages from businesses and clubs within a city can interact with each other to tell each other (and their fans) about things happening in the community.

Along with this update, Facebook is also rolling out the new messaging system to those who don’t already have it. Back in November, Facebook announced their new messaging system, and allowed a few people to receive invites to the new messaging system. I myself received one of those invites, so I’ve had the chance to use it for a few months now.

There are many new features in the new messaging system. The inbox is sorted by friends, instead of subjects. When creating a new message, users no longer have the option to input a subject, just a name and a  message. Click on a friend’s name, and you’ll see all the messages and chats you’ve ever had between each other, all in a timeline format.

One of the other new features about the messaging system is a social inbox, meaning only friends or people who have messaged a user before will appear in the inbox. Anyone else who sends you a message automatically goes to the Other folder, which can be accessed by clicking on Messages and then Other. (I don’t particularly like this feature though, because I have to click on Messages to see if I have any new messages in the Other folder, and I don’t always remember to do that.)

If you have a Facebook Username (sign up here), you’ll be able to opt-in to receive messages via your Facebook email address, which will be yourUsername@facebook.com. Facebook automatically detects when a message is sent from a friend’s email account, so it will appear as coming from that friend. If you aren’t friends with them, the message appears in the Other folder.

One of the most requested features that Facebook is now implementing is the ability to leave a thread (a message that was sent to multiple people). The old messaging system would not allow that, so if a user was included in it by someone else, and didn’t want to be, that user would automatically receive updates every time someone posted a new message, even though that user wouldn’t like too. To leave a thread in the new messaging system, just go to Actions while viewing a thread, and click Leave Conversation.

If you administer a Page, you can opt-in to a new page right away by clicking here. Note that if you don’t chose to opt-in right away, Facebook will automatically give you the new Page on March 10, 2011, (five days before it shuts down…. just kidding 😀 ).

P.S. It also looks like Facebook is rolling out the new Photo Viewer to everyone.

YouTube Launches Superbowl Ad Site

YouTube has launched a channel for watching, rating and sharing Superbowl ads. This year, after the ads air, they will be posted to this channel for people to watch again, rate and share.

Personally, I don’t watch football, but I’ll definitely be checking out this channel over the weekend as they post new commercials.

You can view the channel at http://youtube.com/adblitz

Happy 10th Birthday, Wikipedia!

Today, January 15th, is Wikipedia’s 10th anniversary. The site first went online on January 15th of 2001. Back then, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook didn’t even exist!

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Of course this can lead to problems because the information is not always accurate. However, there are systems in place that prevent the editing of some pages which are susceptible to vandalism.

Wikipedia was founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Singer. Their original project was called Nupedia, and was a project to produce a free encyclopedia written by professionals. However, production of articles were slow, so they discussed how they might make it better. It was discussed that it should be more open to editing, and on January 10, 2001, the idea of Wikipedia was born.

On January 15, 2001, the wikipedia.com domain was registered and went online.

There are over 3.5 million articles in English alone. The site also features articles in over 270 languages.

A New Year. A New Blog Post

Well, I haven’t posted on here since October, so I think it is time to do so again.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! It’s now 2011. Anyone got any plans for this year? I have plans to save up some money and go to college in the fall. I’d like to take Computer Science. I enjoy working with computers, figuring out problems with them, and I enjoy programming websites and stuff like that.

I had a great Christmas! I got to spend some time together with my family. I hope you all had a great Christmas as well.

So, what do you think 2011 will bring? iPad 2, iPhone 4G? Windows 8?

I really don’t know what to say. I need to get back into the blogging mode I guess.

I’ll have more to say another day.

Together is Amazing

Shaw recently launched a movement called “Together is Amazing.” Below is the commercial to launch “Together is Amazing.”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE0rSA-4hKM&version=3]

“Together is Amazing” is an idea to bring people together to do amazing things using the Shaw network. “Fill the Food Bank” is one of the amazing things Shaw is currently doing. For every pound of food donated to local food banks throughout Canada, the donation will be matched by Shaw and Campbell’s. This means for every pound of food donated to local food banks turns into three pounds being donated!

This year, some members of the Student Advisory Team of North Peace Secondary School in Fort St. John, BC will be going around to collect food on Hallowe’en. This is part of a campaign called “Hallowe’en for Hunger,” a Canadian campaign to collect non-perishable items on Hallowe’en instead of candy. Last year, youth from across Canada collected 217,713 pounds of food to donate to food banks across Canada. This is a great time for both events to run as it means every pound of food collected during Hallowe’en will also be tripled when it is donated to local food banks across Canada. Donate this Hallowe’en to help fill the Salvation Army food bank!

There are also many other ways to donate. Food can be dropped off at the Shaw office on 100th Ave, Safeway or Sobeys. (I am not sure about other locations.) The “Fill the Food Bank” campaign from Shaw officially ends on November 15, but that doesn’t mean food won’t be accepted after that date (it just won’t be tripled). Every pound of food donated to the Salvation Army still helps!

Windows Live Spaces to WordPress Migration

Hello all,

Recently, Windows Live announced that it would be merging its Spaces platform with WordPress. This would eliminate the Spaces platform and transfer everything over to WordPress. Although personally I favoured Windows Live Spaces, I guess now we just have to live with it.

By now, when you go to your blog, you should see the option to move your blog to WordPress. If you haven’t done this by January 4, 2011, you won’t be able to make any changes after that date. On March 16, 2011, Windows Live Spaces will no longer exist! It’s sad to see Windows Live Spaces leave but I guess I’ll have to live with WordPress for now.

For now,
Matt

To activate a feature in the making, open your Applications menu and click the “Browse More Applications” link at the bottom of the list. Once that page loads, select “Prototypes” from the left hand sidebar. It’s the last one on the list. Once you click on it, you’ll see a few new prototypes that you can activate. Select one from the list. When the page loads, click on the “Activate Prototype” button underneath the profile picture on that page. You will see that feature working when you browse the site.

MSN Security

MSN (now known as Windows Live) is a popular instant messaging program these days. However, there are some things everyone needs to be aware of when using instant messaging programs like Windows Live.

Recently, if you’ve received e-mails or instant messages from a friend advertising a link about how to find out who has blocked you, or something else, it is probably because they have given their login information away to another website. DON’T CLICK IT!
If you’ve click on a link, you know what happens. The website asks you for your username and password for your Windows Live account. The website then logs into your account. What your probably not aware of is that it sends spam to everyone on your contact list. Once you login to this site with your username and password, it saves the information and continually sends spam through email and instant messaging to all of your friends. These block checkers are only intended to steal your password. Sites like these can also contain malware, which are programs that download and hide on your computer, recording keystrokes and possibly destroying your computer files.
If you’ve ever clicked on a link like this, you should probably run an anti-virus scan. Another important thing to do is to change your Windows Live password. This way, the information saved by the website will no longer work, and your friends will stop receiving spam sent from your account.
IMPORTANT:
Always check the address bar. Never give your login info for one website to another website.

Facebook Security

So, you logged into your account this morning, only to discover that your account had posted several spam comments advertising a video or weight loss site to all of your friends. This is because you logged into a site that looked like Facebook.com, but it wasn’t. It was a site designed to look and act like Facebook, but was only intended to steal your password. This is known as "phishing," By now, Facebook has blocked the links, so you can’t visit them, or post these links on the site. But if you clicked on the link before, and entered your password, there are some things you need to do:

– Run an anti-virus scan.
You should run an anti-virus scan to make sure nothing was downloaded to your computer that can track information you type in, such as your Facebook email and password, so your account will not be hacked in the future.
– Change your password
Changing your password is important because it voids the old password, and therefore the password you gave to the fake website will not work with your account anymore.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
– Always check the address bar.
Whenever you are logging into a site that requires a username and password, always check the address bar. For Facebook, it should always say facebook.com or www.facebook.com. If the address bar says something different, like facebook.somethingelse.com, then it isn’t the real site. A site like this could steal your password and spam all your friends.
